How do I use Zoom in Canvas as a Student?
Zoom is a web conferencing tool that provides remote conferencing services. The Canvas-Zoom integration allows your instructors to schedule online meetings from within Canvas.
Seeing a Zoom Meeting Scheduled by your Instructor
- Click Zoom from your course navigation menu. The first time you click on this link, you will have to "authorize" the Zoom app.
- Your Zoom account should be automatically provisioned.
- If you see an error message, please change the email address listed in Canvas to the one listed in Zoom. For most users, this would be your netid followed by @rice.edu.
- If you see this message, please go to your Canvas profile settings.
- Then under “Ways to Contact,” you may need to add your NetID email address. You will then be emailed a confirmation link.
- Click the link in email to finish registering.
- Then in your Canvas profile settings, click on the star icon next to it to make it the default.
- Try the Zoom link again. You may need to refresh your browser.

Student Notifications
Once the meeting is scheduled by your instructor, the meeting will appear on the course's Canvas Calendar.
Joining a Zoom Meeting from Canvas
- You will need to join your meeting by clicking the Zoom link from your Canvas course.
- Then click on the "Upcoming Meetings" tab.
- Then click on the "Join" button next to the correct meeting.
- If you don't have Zoom installed, you will be guided to download and install it. This only needs to be done once.
Viewing Cloud Recordings
If your instructor chooses to record and upload the meeting, you will be able to go to the "Cloud Recordings" tab to view them.
