Through attention to the work of influential and innovative American women musicians as well as feminist music critics and scholars, students will exercise and refine their ability to discuss and contextualize popular music. Students will learn to assess the formal aspects of music, irrespective of previous music training, and develop precise and evocative nontechnical music writing skills using, when appropriate, the specialized vocabulary employed in class and readings.
