X-Men is a Marvel superhero comic book franchise known for its social commentary on
discrimination. “Mutant kind” is hated and feared for their innate gifts, which lends the series to allegorical depictions of racism, homophobia, genocide, and religious discrimination. These depictions often reflect the societal strife relevant to the time of publication, from the 60’s Civil Rights Movement to recent depictions of homophobia. Students will read and analyze
highlights from X-Men’s 50 years of comic book history through the lens of contemporary American culture. Students will also read essays, watch documentaries on related topics,
and view clips from Fox’s X-Men movies.
